High Level Event on Food Waste

Food loss and waste emerged as a major problem following the publication of a comprehensive FAO report in 2011. Approximately one third of all food produced in the world, equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes per year, is lost or wasted. The severity of this problem increases when the number of hungry people worldwide is taken into account.

According to FAO's State of World Food Security and Nutrition Report 2022, an estimated 760 million people went hungry in 2021, representing 9.8 percent of the world's population. The food lost and wasted could potentially feed 1.26 billion hungry people each year.
In this context, cities have a key role to play in addressing food loss and waste reduction as effectively and quickly as possible.
